Home Rings Together
The What:
'Home Rings Together' is a jewellery pendant that was designed and made from scratch. The pendant was sawed, filed, sanded and riveted with aluminium, brass and copper. Inspired by the diverse nature of Queensland homes. One aspect being their batten gables (the striped patten of wood under where roofs meet).
The Why:
Having this concept as a pendant and the narrative of home spirals well together being placed near the heart. The affect of the piece easily losing its polish but still being shaped as home to represent the old but still the same. The emotional attachments to places that never truly leave us emotionally.
The How:
This pendant is special because when a person compliments or asks about our jewellery, there is always a narrative to tell. Whether where it was from, or who gave it to them. Using this opportunity of short conversation as a designed advantage, through contemporary jewellery, was an amazing opportunity to experience.
Politics, Our Forced Religion
The What:
'Politics, Our Forced Religion' invites the conversation about the rational ignorance of parents. Those that are choosing to raise the younger generation based on political disinformation for their own self validation.
The Why:
This poster is from the perspective of the raised, where mass consumption of the media provides personal ethics crosschecking. A result where once realised, is that their parent's love is purely transactional. Their love, for the acceptance of their disinformation as the truth, and nothing but the truth.
The How:
Having this topic as a poster is beneficial because it provides a sense of reflection. A conversation about whether truth and self-indicted-discovery is worth sacrificing, or if love should even reach to this type of questioning.
Politics x 7
The What:
'Politics x 7" is targeted to those who will look into the tiny details. Every little tweak puts a semantic satiation into affect. For some, it might be taken as every little detail is what makes a topic so complex. While others might perceive this as how every little effort can be used to disdain a topic.
The Why:
Purely because the tweaks made are from a visual communications tool kit. Whether it's kerning or slighting changing the horizontal scale, using only this toolkit provides a subtle note to the topic that design affects politics. Some will argue it goes hand in hand with it, or some reject the idea completely.
The How:
This being a poster provides as a reminder. For designers, it's a statement that every choice with our tools can impact how much meaning a word looses. While for others, it can be taken as a warning that every action can be used to build a bigger form of harm.
Not my Thoughts, Not my Design
The What:
'Not my Thoughts, Not my Design' is a nod to the common learning curve as a designer, separating yourself from the design. To make critiques not feel personal. But what if it is personal? What if our designs are from the depths of our ethics and experiences. To suddenly make a design feel less yourself and more 'corporate safe' was a thought process I choose to question constantly as a designer.
The Why:
For all to do the same, to me means, that we all follow the same reason. But, should the same reason apply to all situations? Should we always be personally? What if our mission for our design is to be personal? is corporate-safe design realistic, in a world where design affects the politics of our society? Are we as designers, not sensitive enough?
The How:
This poster is special to me because it is on the line of art, where it is self expressive but on the blurred line of design. To me, I feel this is important since the poster can be used as self reflection for the assumptions. Questioning the basics we have had to learn as designers to engage with the industry.
Motivation says HIII
The What:
'Motivation says HIII' is poster that shoves imposter syndrome and doomscrolling in the same conversation. It takes a nod to the feelings that even as designers, if we fall for doomscrolling, even though we should 'know better' that we are a fraudulence to the industry.
The Why:
The importance of this can invoke the conversation about the standards that new designers are facing now compared to already, well established designers. A well respected company now, won't face the scrutiny on if their designs is sustainable enough with their peers, or consider the the end of life cycle for their designs.
The How:
If the concept of an AI data centre was introduced as a student, due to the standards of sustainability, we would be criticised back to the conceptual stage. However, this conversation matters because it shows how being a decent designer is only half the walk compared to a proper presence in society. It can provide a sense of questioning of the current well established designers today and wonder if they are under any assumptions about how they work.
